Notice of NextGen GPS Mapping Equipment and Software

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has officially completed the development and implementation of the ITSFM NextGen cloud-based GPS mapping system.

This serves as notice that FDOT has officially retired the Trimble Geo7x data collector, TerraSync software, and GPS Pathfinder Office platform as the Department's standard GPS data collection solution. FDOT will continue to support the historical GPS data collection process through December 31, 2026, at which time all contractors and consultants must be fully transitioned to the NextGen platform.

The NextGen system incorporates the Trimble TerraFlex and Trimble Connect platforms to support intelligent data collection, project provisioning, and integration with the ITSFM. The system utilizes contractor-provided TerraFlex-compatible GNSS antenna/receivers, Bluetooth and internet-capable phones or tablets, compatible Bluetooth laser range finders, and a minimum submeter real-time correction service.

In lieu of requesting a GPS seed file, a DocuSign ITSFM Project Authorization Form must be completed and submitted by both the GPS contractor and CEI consultant. Upon approval, FDOT will create a project zone for data collection containing the ITSFM data dictionary, existing ITSFM infrastructure, and required ITSFM configuration data. Following project creation, the FDOT Project Administrator will assign Trimble TerraFlex licenses to approved personnel as required.

NextGen Inventory Data Collection

Building upon the successful deployment of the NextGen GPS mapping process in early 2025, FDOT has expanded the TerraFlex platform to include ITS inventory data collection. This enhancement consolidates GPS mapping and inventory collection into a single cloud-based workflow, significantly reducing paperwork, eliminating duplicate data entry, and improving the quality, consistency, and reliability of data delivered to the ITSFM.

The NextGen inventory data collection process includes integrated auditor and editor support documentation and eliminates the need for all ITSFM feature import templates as well as many  data collection forms currently used for project deliverables.

FDOT will continue supporting the legacy inventory data collection forms and all feature import templates through December 31, 2026. After this date, support for legacy GPS data collection processes and all ITSFM feature import templates will be discontinued, and the NextGen TerraFlex-based workflow will become the Department's standard process for GPS mapping and inventory data collection activities.

FDOT will continue to provide follow-up training to certified ITSFM GPS & Cable Mapping and certified ITSFM Acceptance Testing for CEI personnel.
