SR 436 PedSafe Project - City of Altamonte Springs

The Central Florida region is a growing center of transportation innovation, with greater emphasis placed on deploying Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) and Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) solutions to improve safety and mobility in the area. In support of this vision for improved safety and mobility in the region, the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), in cooperation with MetroPlan Orlando and the University of Central Florida (UCF), submitted the Connecting the East Orlando Communities ATCMTD application in 2017. A key component of this application was the PedSafe project, which will outfit signalized intersections on the University of Central Florida (UCF) main campus with an innovative pedestrian and bicycle collision avoidance system that utilizes advanced detection systems to identify pedestrian/bicycle presence and alert connected vehicles (CV) of potential hazardous situations nearby.
