SR 29 Advanced Wildlife Warning System

This project deployed equipment to detect animals (especially the endangered Florida panther) within a nearly two-mile segment of SR 29 south of Immokalee in Collier County.  Detection equipment includes thermal cameras, radar detection, and video cameras for confirmation.  When animals are detected, flashing beacons on signs within the detection zone will be activated to alert drivers of wildlife present in the area and to drive with caution. Additionally, the system will utilize radar-based vehicle tracking, aggregate data processing, and wildlife detection system integration to analyze traffic patterns and driver responses to advisory signage.

In addition to the flashing beacons, a Connected Vehicle Roadside Unit was deployed to broadcast the alerts to travelers equipped with On-Board Units (OBUs).  This provides an in-vehicle alert for the length of the corridor.

This project was operational in summer 2025.
