Davis Highway CAV
Davis Highway (SR 291) is one of the main arterials connecting I-10, I-110, and US 90 in Escambia County. This major arterial carries traffic volumes that reach 60,000 Average Annual Daily Traffic (AADT) and is a primary detour route for incidents that happen along US 90. The heavy volume of traffic on Davis Highway creates congestion and safety concerns along the roadway, especially between Olive Road (SR 290) to I-10. Optimizing traffic flow for incident diversion and emergency response is critical for the County. Upgrading the detection and cabinets will enable the County to optimize the operation of the Davis Highway and improve mobility.
The project will upgrade the cabinets to SSBRC Section 676 NEMA TS-2 Type VI to provide the inputs necessary for ATSPM and space for future technology, such as roadside units (RSUs) for connected vehicle technology. Upgrading the cabinets and detection will provide the additional data and monitoring needed for the County to improve traffic signal operations to support mobility and reduce crashes in the area, in addition to accommodating future technology deployments. The project includes advanced vehicle detection cameras and Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) cameras along the corridor. The videos with machine learning software will be used to analyze traffic to identify near-misses between vehicles, pedestrians, and bicycles to determine potential crash problems and select appropriate countermeasures at the designated intersections.
