State Road (S.R.) 9/I-95 from North of 6th Avenue South to North of S.R. 704/Okeechobee Boulevard Managed Lanes Project

About the Study:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) had been advancing a study to evaluate the addition of managed lanes along the I-95 corridor from north of 6th Avenue South to north of State Road (S.R.) 704/Okeechobee Boulevard, a segment of approximately 6.2 miles. Interchanges within the study corridor include 10th Avenue North, S.R. 882/Forest Hill Boulevard, US 98/S.R. 80/Southern Boulevard, Belvedere Road, and S.R. 704/Okeechobee Boulevard. The corridor limits fall within the municipalities of Lake Worth, West Palm Beach, Lake Clarke Shores, Glen Ridge, and Cloud Lake. The project is adjacent to the PD&E Study for the southern segment of the I-95 Managed Lanes in Palm Beach County (FPID 444202-1).

At this time, the study has been paused, and no additional work is moving forward until further notice.
Within the project limits, I-95 is functionally classified as an Urban Principal Arterial Interstate. It also serves as an emergency evacuation route and is part of the State’s Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) and the National Highway System (NHS).

Prior to the pause, the proposed typical section included eight 12-foot general purpose lanes, four 12-foot managed lanes, and zero to two auxiliary lanes, with 9 to 13 feet of widening in various areas, along with a proposed 2-foot barrier. Due to high traffic volumes to and from US 98/S.R. 80/Southern Boulevard, improvements were being evaluated at the I-95/S.R. 80 interchange and access connections to Palm Beach International Airport (PBIA). Concepts included a direct connection from the I-95 northbound managed lanes to the westbound S.R. 80 high-speed through lanes, and a direct connection from the eastbound S.R. 80 high-speed elevated lanes to the northbound I-95 managed lanes. The posted speed limit throughout the corridor is 65 mph.

FDOT will provide updates if the study resumes or if new information becomes available.
