Statewide Express Lanes Software (SELS)
Express lanes are optional travel lanes, located on an interstate or toll road, that customers can choose to use when they want a more predictable travel time. Express lanes are designed with a limited number of entrance and exit points to serve longer, more regional trips. Customers in the express lanes may pay a static or variable toll depending on the facility. Customers must have an active and properly mounted SunPass or other interoperable transponder, as no cash or TOLL–BY–PLATE is accepted in the express lanes.
SELS is the primary interface for express lanes operations and integrates with SunGuide Transportation Sensor System (TSS) detectors to calculate tolls amounts, visualize traffic conditions, and provide notifications of toll changes. This enables operators to monitor roadway performance in real time and manage tolling operations efficiently and post operations on Toll Amount and Lane Status Dynamic Message Signs.
SELS also allows the configuration of parameters such as toll segments, corridor management, level of service tables, and devices which all assist in adapting to changing traffic conditions. This software improves decision making as well by allowing report creation to track such aspects as toll amounts and performance. SELS can operate by time of day, variable, manual, zero toll, closed, or no express lane modes.
Figure 1 illustrates the SELS environment and its interaction with various subsystems such as SunGuide®, tolling devices, Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), and the Florida's Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) system. This ensures effective system integration and accurate toll management.
