Sheppards Pier Equation

Dr. Sheppard’s equations targets three dimensionless hydraulic and sediment transport parameter groups to predict scour at simple piers.  The equation is applicable to both riverine and tidal flows, applies to sediment sizes typical within the continental US, and gives good results for both narrow and wide piers.  Future modifications are planned to account for suspended sediments in the water column, soil gradation, and time-dependence.  A detailed discussion is included in the Florida Bridge Scour Training Manual.  The current version of the pier scour equation is summarized below:
