Urban Core Overview
Roadways in the Urban Core (C6) Context Classification reside in highly urbanized areas with a population greater than 1 million people. The buildings surrounding the roadway in this context are generally more than 4 stories tall, mixed use, and built up right to the edge of the sidewalk. Most areas that are considered Urban Core are regional centers and destinations that are within a well-connected roadway network.
Urban Core roadways have an allowable design speed of 25 - 30 mph which enables the implementation of several speed management techniques per the FDOT Design Manual . These roadways have heavy traffic and are essential to a multiple modes of transportation. The image below illustrates the amount and type of users that are expected in the Urban Core context.
Transit, pedestrians, and bicyclists are the majority of the users of a street in this context which is why it is so important that the design of the street takes their safety and comfort into consideration. A decently large volume of vehicles is also expected to be using this type of facility, but not very much freight.
