Bridge Information
Welcome
The FDOT inspects all public highway bridges in the state of Florida and our bridge inventory ranks among the best in the nation, as a percentage of bridges that are considered "poor" (FHWA’s Tables of Frequently Requested NBI Information). All publicly-owned highway bridges are either sufficient for legal-weight loads, posted with weight restriction signs, or closed. Additionally, the Department ensures at least 90% of its structures meet its standard – a National Bridge Inventory (NBI) rating of 6 or above (see The FDOT Source Book), and state-owned bridges in poor condition are recommended for repair, rehabilitation, or replacement.
Beginning with the 1st Quarter extract for 2025 the Florida Bridge Information report includes the Performance Rating of each bridge. This is a rating based on the controlling NBI rating and is broken into the following categories:
- Excellent – NBI Rating of 8 or 9
- Good – NBI Rating of 6 or 7
- Fair – NBI Rating of 5
- Poor – NBI Rating of 4 or below
The tables prior to Q1 2025 retain two terms that have been phased out by FHWA, Structurally Deficient (SD) and Functionally Obsolete (FO), as well as Health Index and Sufficiency Rating. The Department does not use any of these 4 terms or calculations; they are only reported for historical purposes. For a description of NBI terms, see the BMS Coding Guide.
