Trimble FAQ
1. Where do I begin?
There are several things that you need to download to begin using the Trimble software.
- Purchase Trimble Business Center from Trimble directly. We recommend the Survey Advanced version. FDOT employees should submit an IRR to gain access to the license server.
- Open the FDOT Trimble Handbook which can also be found on the Final Estimates webpage which can be used as a guide through the next steps to take for setting up the software.
2. Will FDOT provide in-person Trimble training?
There will be no formal training provided by FDOT. The Trimble Handbook details the steps (with screenshots) required for calculation of earthwork quantities.
Follow the steps in the "Steps to Contact Trimble" document to inquire with Trimble about other individualized training opportunities.
Also, view the Trimble Video Series at https://www.fdot.gov/construction/TrainingVideoShorts/trainingvideoshorts.shtm.
3. Trimble never finishes loading or runs extremely slow. What do I do?
There are several possible reasons for poor performance. Start your troubleshooting with the following:
- Ensure the latest and greatest version of the video driver from your specific video card manufacturer is installed.
- Ensure your computer meets the recommended system requirements (Trimble website under Technical Information).
- Contact your IT Department or a Trimble representative for support.

Create a .XYZ or .TXT file in a text editor (Microsoft notepad) with all field survey points. Verify data entry prior to importing the file into Trimble. An example file format is below.

In an effort to eliminate redundant questions about Trimble, the State Construction Office will answer questions that arise, in order to provide general guidance for FDOT staff and stakeholders.
