Managed Lanes

Picture of a Florida Roadway

Objective:

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) is applying the Transportation System Management and Operations (TSM&O) strategy of managed lanes in a number of high traffic areas throughout the state. This strategy creates the ability to manage demand through effective monitoring and adjustments of operations and design. The program is designed to use managed lanes to relieve congestion, improve safety and provide drivers with additional choices for travel. Express Lanes are the most common type of managed lanes that will be utilized throughout the state of Florida.

Where are we today?

The Statewide Toll and Express Lane Team meet quarterly to discuss challenges, opportunities and best practices for Districts and the Florida Turnpike Enterprise (FTE) to work together in delivering express lane projects throughout the state.

Where do we want to be?

Provide additional Express Lanes where they will equip drivers with new and reliable mobility choices and allow accurate data collection regarding performance, enabling better decision making and planning for the future needs of the citizens of Florida.

FDOT Central Office in partnership with FTE is initiating the development of an Express Lanes Manual. This manual will furnish the requirements for the Districts when implementing an Express Lane Project.

How do we get there?

Continue to invest in TSM&O high priority focus areas such as managed lanes, which optimize operations, infrastructure and technology maintenance for congestion reduction and incident response.
