I-4 Active Work Zone

As part of the Vital Few Action Plan, District One is supporting the implementation of Active Work Zone elements within an I-4 resurfacing project from CR 557 to the Polk/Osceola County Line.  Two elements will be incorporated into this project:

  1. Queue Detection and Warning System – this system will detect queues as they develop in the approach to the work zone and provide advanced warning to the motorist to slow traffic as they approach the back of queue.
  2. Dynamic Lane Merge System – this system will help create more orderly merging conditions by communicating to drivers through message boards or vehicle on-board units.  The messages advise on merging early or late, depending on traffic characteristics.

This project will help design and construction staff understand the suitability of this approach, and level of effort required to implement it.
