State Safety Office / Safety Engineering / Crash Data
By law, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV) is the official custodian of the crash reports and is responsible for statewide crash data collection and dissemination. The numbers they report are the official numbers.
The DHSMV can provide crash data for all General Data Requests (reports for a county, multiple counties, or the entire state). They can also provide non-site-specific data queries for code values on the traffic crash report form.
Using a portion of the DHSMV crash data and other FDOT data, the FDOT State Safety Office crash records section processes crash records to determine exact locations and can provide location-based crash analyses and listings or summaries of crash data. In addition, the Safety Office can provide geo-located data for crashes on the State Highway System and for crashes on public roads. To request crash data from the FDOT, contact the Safety Office in your District (see below for contacts).
Crash reports that reveal the personal information concerning the parties involved in the crash and that are held by any agency that regularly receives or prepares information from or concerning the parties to motor vehicle crashes are confidential and exempt from the provisions of Section 119.07(1), F.S. for a period of 60 days after the date the report is filed. (Section 316.066 (2)(a), F.S.)
The information provided by the FDOT Safety Office has been compiled from information collected for the purpose of identifying, evaluating or planning safety enhancements. It is used to develop highway safety construction improvements projects which may be implemented utilizing Federal Aid Highway funds. Any document displaying this notice shall be used only for the purposes deemed appropriate by the Florida Department of Transportation. See Title 23, United States Code, Section 409.
For general Crash Data Requests and Crash Statistics contact the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV).
