Roadway Design

The Design Exception and Design Variation Handbook is under construction. A Design Exception is a documented decision to design a highway element or a segment of highway to design criteria that do not meet minimum values or ranges established for that highway or project (Mitigation Strategies; 2007). This manual will be a comprehensive guide for designers to evaluate safety, analyze alternatives, and document decisions that fall below the minimum criteria established by FDOT and/or FHWA. The analytical tools for use in these decisions is evolving and changing, which will require periodic changes to this manual. We ask for your patience.
