Walk and Bike to School Day 2023 at Discovery Oaks Elementary School in Clay County

Did you know that 42 children are hit by a car every day in the United States? All of these tragedies are preventable.

Safe Kids Northeast Florida at THE PLAYERS Center for Child Health led by Wolfson Children’s Hospital is happy to be participating in International Walk and Bike to School Day 2023 at Discovery Oaks Elementary School on October 3rd and 4th. In celebration of this national day and in unity with the injury prevention community, we are sharing vital pedestrian safety tips with children from kindergarten through sixth grade in the form of a fun pep rally and a school-wide walk. The wonderful health teachers at Discovery Oaks Elementary will be implementing pedestrian safety lesson plans into their classes for the weeks leading up to the day of the pep rally. On the morning of the pep rally, certified helmet fitters will be on-site fitting children with helmets. Whether they brought one from home or if we are providing them with a free bike helmet, all children who bike to school and opt into this service will be walking out with a properly fit helmet while supplies last.

We are excited to share that the pep rally will have some special guests including Jaxson de Ville and the ROAR Squad with the Jacksonville Jaguars to pump up the kids and get everyone excited about being a safe walker! Safe Kids Northeast Florida representatives Jessica Winberry and Danielle Carlino will be sharing important personalized safety information to each grade level, including tips about some high-traffic areas near their school, the best places to cross, and other important pedestrian safety skills. On Wednesday, October 4th, we will have safety representatives at each intersection that children typically walk to school from, and as a group, we will walk to the campus together whilst discussing the importance of walking safely to prevent injuries in our community and to save lives! Not only does International Walk to School Day educate on getting active and staying safe, it bonds the school together to celebrate in a way that makes everyone feel like a safety advocate!

Student-Designed Bike Lane Artwork Unveiled

FDOT and its partner agencies unveiled new bike lane artwork designed by Central Florida elementary school students. The unique initiative - which spanned across six counties - promoted cycling safety as part of FDOT's Mobility Week, which promotes safe and efficient travel choices. Winning students were each celebrated with their own bike lane artwork reveal, a certificate presentation, and a brief road safety presentation provided by FDOT representatives for their classrooms.

"Hundreds of students ride their bike to school every day in Central Florida, and it's our job to teach them about safety," said Libertad Acosta-Anderson, Passenger Operations Manager for FDOT District Five. "What better way to encourage safe cycling practices than a fun personalized piece of artwork by their school." Contest winners include:
