State Safety Office
Assist in developing transportation policies, standards, and practices related to the emphasis areas of the Florida Strategic Highway Safety Plan. Administer and maintain the Highway Safety Improvement Program and the Safe Routes to School Program. Perform a statewide uniform traffic crash location process and provide GIS products including statewide crash shapefiles and ArcGIS websites. Update and maintain the Florida All Roads Base map. Conduct training for safety professionals in the use of available crash data and systems. Participate with National, State, and Local traffic safety partners to reduce fatal and serious injury crashes for all public roads in Florida. Champion implementing the use of the Highway Safety Manual. Coordinate ongoing Safety related research.
Administer and maintain the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Highway Safety Grant Program by managing subgrants awarded to traffic safety partners that undertake priority area programs and activities of the Florida Strategic Highway Safety Plan to improve traffic safety and reduce crashes, serious injuries, and fatalities.
Protect FDOT resources and its employees through comprehensive occupational safety and health programs and ensure that the Department meets all Federal, State mandates, and requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OHSA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Florida Statutes, and Executive Orders of the Governor. Coordinate overall safety office goals, objectives, and programs.
A vital responsibility is the development of safety and health procedures and safe work practices designed to enhance the working environment of all Department employees; control unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and the occurrence of work-related accidents; and minimize employee injuries and other property losses.
