Florida Highway Systems, Numbering and Jurisdiction

Transportation Data and Analytics Knowledge Icon Image
The Transportation Data and Analytics Office coordinates and maintains data on various highway system designations. Federal Aid Systems, the National Highway System, functional classification, and urban boundaries are developed in a cooperative process with local officials and FDOT according to Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements, and approved by FHWA before becoming effective. The SIS and FIHS are designated by FDOT, with input from local governments, highway users, and other interested parties.

State Road numbers are assigned by FDOT, and County Road numbers by the counties (with guidance from FDOT). US and Interstate numbers are approved by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO).

State Highway System

  • State Highway System - Roads under the jurisdiction of the Florida Department of Transportation, state-chartered expressway authorities, and other state agencies.
  • Strategic Intermodal System (SIS) - Highways and other modes important for transportation in Florida.

National Highway System

  • Functional Classification - Classification of highways by the way they function relative to the highway network.
  • Urban Boundaries - Boundaries based on Census residential data; modified and approved by Federal Highway Administration.
  • Road Jurisdiction Transfers - Transferring roads to and from the State Highway System, and adding new roads.
  • Road Numbers - State Road (SR) numbers, County Road (CR) numbers, US Route numbers, and Interstate numbers.
